University of Mekelle, Mekelle, Ethiopia
Mekelle University is established in May 2000 by the Government of Ethiopia (Council of Ministers,
Regulations No. 61/1999 of Article 3) as an autonomous higher education institution. The university is
situated in six Campuses Endayesus (Main Campus), Adihaki, Ayder, Kalamino, Aynalem and Quiha which
housed 7 Colleges, 8 Institutes and 2 Schools; the university has admitted 26747 undergraduate students
and 2052 graduate students, and 1962 full-time Academic, 3400 administrative and 1015 hospital staff
members.
Ethiopian Institute of Technology – Mekelle (EiT-M) is one of Mekelle University’s institutes; which is
constitute of five schools Engineering & Technology and Architecture & Urban Planning disciplines that
meets international standards. The mission of EiT-M is pursuing academics, research and community
service and contributing to the advancement of knowledge, economic growth, and social welfare to
national and international community through empowering local communities, excelling in innovation
and entrepreneurship, and partnering with national and international institutions.
The University has also established academic and research links with several Universities and Research
Institutions worldwide. Among these are 18 European, 7 North American and 13 other international
universities; the university has also affiliations with Belgian, Norwegian, Austrian, German and Dutch
government development cooperation, international research organizations.
The School of Architecture and Urban Planning as part of the institute, aspires to improve local
communities´ quality of life through application-oriented community service and research; participatory
and community focused academic researches and discoveries; and the education of future leaders in the
fields.
The School of Architecture and Urban Planning offers Bachelor of Architecture, Urban planning & Design
and Master of Urban planning and development. As part of school’s Research consultancy and
community service, the school is offering research based architectural and urban planning consultancy
for Mekelle University, Mekelle municipality, Tigray regional government, nationwide projects and
others.
