Analysis. Eviction Maps
To gain insight in the occurrence and geographical patterns of evictions, several eviction mapping projects have been initiated. Most are from the US but for the European context there is one interesting mapping database for Brussels.
Take a look at the websites and pick one database and one state/city for which you look more in detail at the eviction data. Take notes on the following questions:
- What is the most recent number of evictions at a state and city level?
- Do you see important spatial differences when you zoom in at a more local/neighbourhood level in terms of evictions and how can these differences be explained in your case study?
Eviction Maps
- Evictionlab.org at Princeton University is building the first nation-wide dataset of evictions in the United States. They collected formal eviction records from 48 states and combined it with census data to paint a better picture of the areas where evictions are happening (https://evictionlab.org/)
- The Anti-eviction Mapping Project documents evictions using data-visualizations, data analysis and storytelling collective documenting to understand evictions better in all its facets in the US. (https://www.antievictionmap.com)
- The Kansas City eviction map produced a map of all evictions taking place in Kansas City. (https://www.evictionkc.org/project).
- The Evictions Study at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Washington, have an interdisciplinary team that examines court records and Sheriff’s warrants to identify sex, race and ethnic disparities of evicted renters. They use the variable ‘relative eviction rate’ to gauge if an area was more affected by eviction than the rest of the study area (https://evictions.study/ )
- The Urban Displacement Project (https://www.urbandisplacement.org) maps displacement and gentrification in 9 US cities and 6 cities outside the US, including London: https://www.urbandisplacement.org/london/london-gentrification-and-displacement
- The only current European eviction mapping project is BRU-HOME (https://bru-home.ulb.be/wordpress/maping-the-evictions/). This is an ongoing research project on housing eviction in Brussels which collects data from different Brussels courts for the year 2018.
