Research Task. Would you be Allowed to Migrate?

In the US and the UK, migration permits are given through a 'point system' method where different attributes are awarded different amounts of points. Only migrants who reach a certain threshold of points are qualified to migrate. In this assignment, you will find out if you would be allowed to migrate and reflect upon the deeper meanings behind the selection process.

Take this quiz to see how you score. Would you be allowed to migrate to the US?

What do these guidelines tell you about what is considered a “good” migrant in the case of the US? Whom does this policy prevent from migrating, and whom does it encourage to migrate? Does this system create or deepen existing inequalities between richer and poorer countries? If yes, why? (200 words max)

Recently, the UK implemented a similar system after completing Brexit. Read this article from the BBC and answer the following questions

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-48785695

Based on this system, whom does the UK want to keep out and whom does the UK want to let in? In what ways are they still selectively participating in EU migration? (200 words max)

Additional task: Now, listen to this podcast from The Guardian about Ukranian refugees in the UK and answer the following questions:

How is the Ukrainian refugee crisis challenging the current British strategy of migration? Why are British people frustrated, and how has Brexit changed they dynamic between Europe and the UK? (250 words max).
